چکیده

In this study, subcritical water was used for the extraction and fractionation of organic atmospheric particulate. Two types of carbonaceous aerosol, diesel exhaust particulate (a relatively nonpolar matrix) and wood smoke particulate (a polar matrix), were sequentially extracted using subcritical water at temperatures ranging from 25°C to 300°C. The importance of each fraction was evaluated using two bacterial systems, the bacterial Polytox respiration test and the genotoxicity (SOS) Chromotest, and two mammalian systems, the in vitro cytotoxicity test and the hepatic mitochondrial respiration test. The results from the toxicity tests were related to the composition of individual fractions.

Toxicity of wide-range polarity fractions from wood smoke and diesel exhaust particulate obtained using hot pressurized water.

Epidemiological and toxicological studies correlate the adverse health effects of particulate matter (PM) with the available information regarding their chemical characterization, which has focused on nonpolar organics (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs]), which are limited to 15 to 50% of total organic carbon. To study both polar and nonpolar species, we have employed hot pressurize...

Source Apportionment of Airborne Particulate Matter Using Organic Compounds as Tracers

-A chemical mass balance receptor model based on organic compounds has been developed that relates source contributions to airborne fine particle mass concentrations. Source contributions to the concentrations of specific organic compounds are revealed as well. The model is applied to four air quality monitoring sites in southern California using atmospheric organic compound concentration data ...

Dual-Fuelling of a Direct-Injection Automotive Diesel Engine by Diesel-Gas Method

Use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in compression-ignition (C-I) engines has always been considered important in the diesel engineering field. This is due to its easy accessibility and good combustion characteristics. In this paper the application of LPG fuel along with diesel oil in a direct- injection automotive diesel engine is experimentally investigated. In order to convert the pure dies...

Comparisons of soxhlet extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, supercritical fluid extraction and subcritical water extraction for environmental solids: recovery, selectivity and effects on sample matrix.

Extractions of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soil from a former manufactured gas plant site were performed with a Soxhlet apparatus (18 h), by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) (50 min at 100 degrees C), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) (1 h at 150 degrees C with pure CO2), and subcritical water (1 h at 250 degrees C, or 30 min at 300 degrees C). Although minor diff...

Characterization of particulate matter emissions from on-road gasoline and diesel vehicles using a soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer

Particulate matter (PM) emissions were measured in July 2010 from on-road motor vehicles driving through a highway tunnel in the San Francisco Bay area. A soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS) was used to measure the chemical composition of PM emitted by gasoline and diesel vehicles at high time resolution. Organic aerosol (OA) and black carbon (BC) concentrations were measured durin...
